Slash began playing on an acoustic guitar but his first electric guitar was a copy of Gibson Explorer given by his grandmother. Later he added a Memphis Les Paul copy, a B.C. Rich Warlock and a B.C. Rich Mockingbird to his collection. In the mid-80s, Slash discovered Gibson Les Paul that quickly becomes his favorite instrument.

For studio sessions and since Appetite For Destruction, the guitar Slash has been using almost exclusively is a replica of a Les Paul Flame 59. But for some specific parts, he sometimes played with other guitars : Flying V 59 ("Knockin' On Heaven's Door" and "Live And Let Die"), Explorer 58 ("Locomotive"), Stratocaster 65 ("Yesterdays", "So Fine", "Back And Forth Again" and "What Do You Want To Be"), Telecaster 52 ("Sucker Train Blues"), Gretsh ("The Last Fight").

When he needs a double-neck guitar, he uses a Gibson EDS-1275 ("Patience", "Knockin' On Heaven's Door") or a Guild Crossroads ("Neither Can I", "Back And Forth Again", "Back To The Moment"). Finally, for most slide parts, Slash uses a Travis Bean T-1000 ("Bad Obsession", "Rusted Heroes").

Even if his rack contains many elements, we can not say that Slash is an effect guitar player. He mainly uses his amp reverb, a slight delay, produced by a Boss DD-5 and a graphic equalizer Boss GE-7 to boost his solos. For some parts, he also makes use of a Crybaby wah-wah pedal ("Mr. Brownstone", "Civil War", "Be The Ball", "Shine", "By The Sword") or a Dunlop talk box ("Anything Goes", "Dust And Bones", "Lower", "Get Out The Door", "Watch This"). With Velvet Revolver, Slash has somewhat expanded his range of effects, since he's been playing with the band he sometimes uses an octave Boss OC-2 and a Fernandes sustainer. In 2006, Dunlop released a Slash Signature Model : the Crybaby SW-95, a wah-wah pedal equipped with a three-band EQ and a distortion boost.
