[转帖]3月31日John Williams在CA演奏会观后感
Reivew: JW at the McCallum Theater, Palm Desert, CAHi all!
I saw John Williams when he played at the McCallum Theater in Palm Desrt, CA last March 31. I drove over 200 miles for the whole trip but it was worth it as this was my first JW concert.
He changed a few pieces in the printed program, here's what he played:

Solid technique and relaxed stage presence, just like what I've seen on his video documentary. He tore into each piece just as soon as he sat down from entering the stage.
He played a newer Smallman with the armrest, and he was amplified with what looked like an AKG C414 condenser and 2 JBL wedge monitors placed to the rear of the stage. From where my wife and I sat, his sound was muddy and nowhere near the sound of his recordings. This is the 2nd Smallman I heard in concert, the first being Ben Verdery's, and I would have to say that I like BV's tone better, even when he used a pickup to play his composition with loop delay.
Another peeve that night, the audience didn't know when to applaud! For the first few pieces, JW rushed through the pieces just to beat the audience from clapping mid-piece! That destroyed the Sketches and Albeniz pieces for me. Good thing JW had a handheld mic onstage which he used to talk to the audience and he more or less gave the duration of the following pieces so
people can more or less estimate when to clap.
In summary, I was glad to have finally seen JW in concert. I don't always agree with his iterpretations but there's no denying that he's a SUPERB guitarist and deserves his place in the CG world. Where other people would want to give up playing after seeing him, I couldn't wait to get home and start practicing!
