Subject: Re: Who is Blurdcarl?
If it's the volume box dude, he took a little paint bmp I did on Fender Discussion Page, put a bunch together and started selling them on e-bay for $20 a piece. He claims copyrights on it and patent is pending.
It's a 100k audio taper pot in a box to go in the preamp out/power amp in of a Fender Blues or Hot Rod Deluxe/Deville to allow preamp overdrive, and mostly, to get the volume controls off the touchy lower end.
Besides being an obvious concept, Ampeg sold the same thing in the mid 70's to patch into their amps preamp out/power amp in. I bought one for my SVT, although it didn't work well in that amp.
He lacks grounds for a patent for several reasons, such as prior art, prior design, etc.
A real putz. I have the "new and improved Volume Box" ready to go and I won't worry about him copying it, as he knows nothing about electronics and I know my new box will just confuse him.
At the urging of other FDP'rs, I got into a little pissing match with him. Although I never expected or desired any monetary compensation, I just wanted him to give credit where credit is due. He was one very dishonest person.
I found that the Blues Deluxe sounded best around 5-7 on the clean channel, but it was just wicked loud. The power amp in has the switching on it bringing the SS effects loop into the signal path. I patched in a bass compressor, set for minimum compression, using it as a level controling device only. I found that bringing the volume down in the loop just lowered the volume, and left the breakup characteristics intact.
If one can get power tube (or PI, output transformer, speaker, etc.) breakup, it is heavily masked by the distortion the preamp creates. Dropping the level here in this amp and the Hot Rods works marvously well.
...but I know that everyone on this forum knows all this stuff. |
