Here's my attenuating pride and joy: my KLD PB1. This is the answer to my former problem of the volume levels coming from my 15 watt Fender Blues Junior. We all know this problem. Having a loud amp that forces you to use the master-volume know between 0 and 1 before becoming to loud.
The effective solution is an attenuator. This devices are placed between your amp and it's speaker, to take a part of the speaker load which is transformed to warmth and dissipated by the (great looking) aluminum housing. This version is particularly practical because of his two control-modes.
They call them "Stage" and "Studio" modes.
The Stage-control gives you the choice of 5 settings:
Min: True Bypass4: 1.8 dB of attenuation3: 3.6 dB of attenuation2: 5.4 dB of attenuation1: 7.2 dB of attenuation
These settings are practical and sufficient for stage-use. They allow you to use all your favourite amp settings, whilst being able to adjust your overall volume to the venue with the PB1.
The Studio-control uses a rheostat/l-pad to provide far more attenuation, varying from 7.2 to 30 dB.
To illustrate what this means:
On my 15 watt amp, with the amps gain, the amps master-volume ánd the PB1 at 12 o'clock, the overall volume will allow a normal conversation whilst playing. Both modes have very little effect on the characteristics and tone of my amps. There is some effect, but this was compensated by the tiniest adjustment of my tone control.
Cons? One might dislike the lack of graphic design or notice that the "stage" and "studio" controls use opposite meaning of the word "Minimum". If these are a problem to you, feel free to spend a multiple of the PB1's price to get an equal quality. The PB1 is very affordable and practical, looks and feels sturdy and is very transparant. An excellent solution to a well annoying problem.
