|
| | Hi,
I was fortunate enough to be invited to the school where Chen Zhi teaches.
It's a middle school for music not far from the Temple of Heaven.
There, I met up with Kim Hee Hong of Alma Guitars and Park Chun Hyuk of the Seoul Guitar Academy. We were given a private concert by Chen Zhi's students.
Of note, is a guitar quartet and Zhu Liying, a 16 year old girl who plays beyond
her years...and for a person who has played only 5 years while performing
the Brouwer Sonata effortlessly - I was blown away! It seems the younger generation
are able to speak English very well too so I had a nice chat with her during dinner.
Apparently all of Mr. Chen's 30 young students play at a high level. I beleive it.
The quartet made of 4 young guys who have only been rehearsing for the past
3 months, play as well as the LA Quartet. Each one of them is a virtuoso in their
own right, including the blind kid who doesn't have to worry about reading music...
he just gets a little help from someone to sit him down and away he goes on cue.
Li Jie had dropped by as well. She is no longer a little girl but a very attractive young
lady and I can only guess the monster pieces she's got up her sleeves.
Mr. Chen Zhi does all the musical directing and lends a lot of his expertise
in the way of interpretation. Wu Hua is his assistant and has spent 10 years studying
in Barcelona.
I'm not sure how many of the 30 or so students will graduate to the Central Conservatory.
I was told, maybe 10 %.....so it's a tough program. Next week, I get to catch up with
Jiang Wei the founder of guitarchina.com though I suspect it's a different story in the
world of Rock music in China. All the more respect that Zhen Zhi deserves for his
achievement.
