I've got a Fretless M Bass - who wants to touch me? :) - May 16, 2005

Went up to Terryville, CT to pick up the new bass this weekend. I got to see Jon's work shop. It's very, very clean. He must work really hard at making sure wood dust doesn't even have a chance to settle. I imagine that gets out of control easily. His place is clearly set up as a one man operation at this time though I'm sure he'd love the opportunity to expand if the business was there. So how's the new bass, you ask? First of all, it looks fabulous. The wood work and details are gorgeous. The oil finish is very nice feeling and looking . There is a faint smell of the finish that I hope will clear out over time. Soundwise, it really sings. It has every bit of that "mwah" quality that people buying fretless basses are looking for. Feelwise, The wide string spacing, helps me to feel right at home and the playing ramp helps to make sure I don't dig in so much that my sound is all distorted. I was concerned about not being able to find my way on the fretless fingerboard but the lines really help. After clocking some good time this weekend, I really think I could get used to it. It's different, obviously, than playing fretted so I feel a bit lost. When you're fingering a fretted bass it's kind of like you're putting your finger between frets (albeit, always toward the body). On the fretless you have to be right on top of where you want the string length to be. It looks and feels very different. |
