Xuefei Yang's new Album: Video
http://yang40degreesnorth.com/

[Bloomberg]
In my opinion this is worse than anything else from her, so far.
But then again I've never liked her playing.

[dinga]
ny reason?

For me, mixing Chinse and Spanish pieces together in one album is a bit odd.

Isn't that a little harsh? What do you not like?

[TheEvan]
Thanks for the link. She sounds sooo much better on that cedar guitar. Fleta, Howell, Kohno???

[RAM]
There was a bit of discussion on the GSI forum on her guitar. She plays a Ramirez Elite for concertos, apparently, and the Smallman for solo work. Perhaps some of the CD is recorded with the Ramirez? I hope so, haven't listened yet... If it is just the Smallman I will likely pass.
Rene
PS the guitar on the CD cover looks like a Fleta.

[Pauline Leland](版主)
In the intro/documentary video, she says she used 4 guitars for the recordings.

I don't understand what's harsh about it.
It's just my opinion. I don't like her playing.
My main gripe, along with several others, is that often she plays either hyper emotionally or completely cold with very little in between.

[FrankB]
I think it's fantastic! This is Xuefei Yang playing as a guitarist, not another recital of the same tired material. Perf de Castro's "Journey Through 10 Strings" CD contains both european and filpinio compositions,
and that's so much more interesting to me. Both are saying, "Here's what I like, and I hope you
like it as well."

[RicardoP]
Good for her doing some different repertoire for a reason.
I think it sounds fairly well done according to what I hear in the extracts of that video link, nevertheless, I don't rate her, she is an artifitial musician for me, technically good, musically still can't find "her".

Yes, very harsh opinion. [Big Grin]

Anyway, I sort of agree even though I am reluctant to say bluntly. Somehow I prefer those other Chinse girls. I bought 2 of four angels' DVDs and I like their play - nothing artificial or no too much emotion/lack of emotion I can find. Just clean and virtuostic play as supposed to be. Many of their plays can be found in youtube, but you can probably order their DVDs from stringsbymail.

I like her interpretation of Sevilla. I this one and the one in a David Russell's album are the best recordings I ever heard.

[Bloomberg]
Have you heard John Williams's version on Echoes of Spain?

In my opinion it is much, much better than what Xufei does. No comparison.

You must forgive me for thinking it is a little harsh to say "of all the awful crap she has done, this is the worst....." [Big Grin] I just mean that she appears to be quite accomplished while lacking in the interpretation area. I don't really like her playing either. It is all in taste. I would hardly say she is as bad as you reference though.

I have most of the recordings (about 50 GB mp3 files of various classical guitarists' albums) and I did listened to most of JW's. It is a personal issue - but I really don't like most of JW's pieces except for Granados' Andaluza.
My favourite guitarists can form a long list: David Russell, Pepe and Angel Romero, Chris Parkening(Yes, Parkening, for his Bach works), N Kraft, Stephan Schmidt, Goran Sollscher, Manuel Barrueco, Xuefei Yang...Julian Bream, and partially - Andres Segovia,
but no, no JW, for me (I may wrong), it is just a plain water...As a guitar player I may take his play as example in my practicing but as a audience I don't enjoy it.
Again, it is a personal thing.

Her playing was so dull a few weeks ago in SF that I left during intermission! Plus, her programming left a lot to be desired.

[OldNorm]
oh dear! I'm going to see her next month.

anyway, the guitar festival at London's Southbank this year seems to be entirely blues and flamenco. I'm glad somebody is programming something else (of all the world's many and varied styles of folk music, nothing bores me more than blues or flamenco, both of which have been leaden parodies of themselves for decades now).
Carlos Barbosa-Lima last week was awesome though (not part of the guitar festival). So disarmingly intimate and charming and modest, but brilliant playing.

what I don't like abut Fei's chinese stuff is it all seems a bit westernised. I might change my opinion after the concert, but I'm a bit afraid ahead of the fact that there might be a bit of Madame-Butterflyness about this stuff.
But I sympathise with her plight, she doesn't have the luxury that CBL has of everyone being familiar with the style (even if they don't know it everbody on Earth knows South American guitar music).

the 40 degrees north connection is really a very contrived way of mixing Spanish warhorses with Chinese-inspired pieces. but why not real chinese pieces? why Garcia, and a piece by a Welshman?

but as I say, I haven't heard it yet. When she's a few feet away in the Wigmore Hall I'm hoping I'll love it.

[Doug51]
Hi Oldnorm
I was at the San Fran concert too and loved it. Moving performance both before and after the interval. The rest of the audience loved it too - she got a standing ovation. She has amazing technique and plays musically. I saw her at her previous San Fran concerts too, and can say that she has improved a lot. She was an amazing player to start with. I can recommend you go see her live.
