In 1977, the young Fodera went to work as a journeyman under the watchful eye of famed luthier Stuart Spector of Spector Guitars. There he was able to meet and work alongside many talented people including Ned Steinberger, who developed the now legendary NS design bass during that period of time. Such master craftsmen were essential in passing along knowledge, advice, and a passion for excellence to the young Fodera and the years spent with Spector were a great learning experience.
In 1981, Fodera left Spector and formed an alliance with bassist/designer Ken Smith. Together, they opened a small shop in Brooklyn, New York, the same shop Fodera Guitars calls home today. Smith supplied the initial funding and, in return, Vinnie made him one custom bass per week. The arrangement continued long after Vinnie eventually bought the company from Smith in 1983. Vinnie Fodera essentially paid Ken Smith for the business with basses. The idea to form a company together came from Vinnie’s close friend, an accomplished New York bassist named Joey Lauricella |
