Summers在二十世纪六十年代开始录制唱片生涯，作为吉他手参加了摇滚风格的“Zoot Money's Big Roll” 乐队和迷幻风格的“Dantalian's Chariot”乐队。1968年5月到7月期间，他成为“Soft Machine”乐队的成员，但是没有与乐队一起录制过唱片。Summers还与 “Eric Burdon and The Animals”乐队录制唱片，七十年代中期他花费了大量时间与Kevin Ayers、 Kevin Coyne和其他一些人做阶段性的工作。他还与 Sting、 Stewart Copeland 和 Mike Howlett组成了“Strontium 90”乐队。当他搬回伦敦居住的时候，他将自己的姓从Somers 改为Summers。
“警察乐队”时期：(1977–1983; 2007-2008)
Summers获得国际声誉是在他成为“The Police”警察乐队的吉他手之后（1977年首次接触警察乐队，之后逐渐成为进入乐队最久的人），代表作有“Message in a Bottle”、 “Don't Stand So Close to Me”和 “Every Breath You Take”。同时，Summers也为乐队写歌，例如“Omegaman”和“Mother”，他写的器乐曲“Behind My Camel”(Sting拒绝演奏 )获得了1980年格莱美最佳摇滚器乐奖。尽管Sting是乐队的主唱，Summers在许多歌曲中也担当了主唱，包括“Be My Girl – Sally” (与别人合写的歌)和“Mother”。
