RichardM:
A lot of transcriptions I have seen, especially of violin or cello stuff->guitar, have added bass notes and things since the guitar is more capable of that stuff. Probably he means he prefers to honor the original score, having single note lines "imply" harmonies and what not. I think that is silly attitude considering when Bach transcribed his OWN music, he always added bass notes and what not. It is all about what the instrument is capable of, and bringing out the best that you can with the piece. Of course that is the whole thing about "interpretation" of the classics. His opinion is valid, but I just think it is a shame not to make use of the instrument you have, to the fullest.

Pepe was definitely talking about adding bass notes, etc. and not ornamentation (I've discussed this issue with students of his). I'm currently working on the 3rd Cello Suite (Bach) and I am adding bass notes in a very minimal fashion (compared to Duarte, for example). Working straight from the cello score really does make you more aware of what is going on in the melody. For me, adding too many extra notes to make an existing harmony more full often obscures what is going on in the melody. There is also a situation that frequently occurs in which, to finger a passage to allow for more basses or harmonic notes, the actual melody cannot be treated properly. This is, of course, a matter of individual taste. For me, too many notes in the cello suites causes the dances to lose some of their dance quality, or makes it much more difficult to impart that feeling. I have posted two of the movements I'm working on here if you care to listen:
