Vox Amplification Ice 9 Overdrive Pedal -- Caution: IcyMarch 24, 2010
Joe Satriani and Vox Amplification have collaborated once again on the fourth -- yes, the fourth -- signature series effects pedal, the Ice 9 Overdrive. This icy effect has two overdrive modes, versatile tone-shaping, and the on-demand “More” switch that according to the manufacturer, users always want more of. The new pedal's name is borrowed from the title of one of Satriani's songs from Surfing with the Alien (1987).
In addition to the More switch, the Ice 9 features a Vintage / Modern mode switch that provides access to two different overdrive voices, each of which was designed to meet Satriani’s exacting specs. Vintage mode employs an op amp and diodes that are said to deliver a sweetly warm, classic, slightly sparkly overdrive. Modern mode, on the other hand, uses a Germanium diode to produce an edgy, aggressive overdrive.
Likewise, the Gain knob can dial in any amount of overdrive from a warm, soft edge to a full-tilt onslaught, notes Vox. Working in conjunction with the Gain control is the Volume knob, which controls the overall volume level when the Overdrive effect is engaged. Stomping down on the “More” button kicks in more more more volume, a +14 dB volume boost to be exact, that can easily cut through the mix.
The Ice 9 pedal has both a custom Tone control and an extra Bass response knob. The Bass control adds extra bottom to the sound before it enters the drive stage, delivering dynamic low-end response; while the Tone control shapes the sound as it exits the drive stage, offering a more flexible sound.
Vox will begin shipping the Ice 9 in June, 2010 at a to be determined price. For more information, please visit voxamps.com.
