If you want to make a 2203 a channel switcher, you will have to mod it. It's a single channel amp with 2 inputs. The low input has 2 gain stages and the high input adds a third.
When you've a cable in both inputs it opens the circuit for the signal in a JCM 800. The high input goes through the first gain stage, through the low input jack, and on to the next stage. The low input drops you in after the first gain stage, hense the lower gain and volume. Having a cable in the low jack opens the signal circuit for the high input.
As the guys have said, you'll have to mod and it's a pretty big mod. Kevin O'Connor has a description and layout in his book The Ultimate Tone Vol. 1.
The OD pedal option is good but it's just not the same as having the amp wide open IMO.
