Rolling Stone is an all-American magazine that has been devoted tomusic, politics, and popular culture for four decades since itsfounding in San Francisco in 1967 by Jann Wenner, who remains theeditor and publisher today. This renowned and revered magazine isknown for its diversity of content, although always synonymous withthe rock and roll way of life. While Rolling Stone has evolved overthe years, certain features and columns regarded as trademarks ofthe magazine have remained intact, such as "National Affairs,""Rock & Roll," and "Random Notes." Rolling Stone isconsidered by many sources and reviews as one of the mostinfluential magazines around, always delivering the greatest ofwhatever is out there in music, film, television, and more.

一开始，专辑定位在报道与推广嬉皮文化，但滚石杂志本身不愿被视作当时的地下杂志，因此报道的求实标准十分严格，并且避免明显的政治色彩。滚石在1970年代早期曾经一度政治色彩较为浓厚，不过这是受当时流行的荒诞新闻学所影响。

滚石杂志到了1970年代中期已经建立了不小的影响力，当时西维雅的母亲/虎克医生合唱团还为杂志作了首"Cover of theRolling Stone"的畅销单曲。

1980年代，滚石杂志仍然留住1960年代的传奇评论家与70年代的莱斯特·班恩斯，不过却与现实妥协，开始认同一些过去所不屑的理念，如药物检验。由于各方新杂志，如《Maxim》与《FHM》如雨后春笋般地出现，滚石为了挽回日趋下滑的销售量，开始出现富有性暗示的内容。现时杂志主要刊载有关电影、电视和流行音乐等资讯。

从2000年开始，滚石杂志开始出版摇滚乐上的排行榜。
