美国《Spin》杂志创办初期最独特的标志就是其对各种非主流音乐的报道，杂志的选材一向大胆而标新立异，这点同相对保守的《滚石》杂志有很大不同。

《Spin》于1985年由发行人Bob GuccioneJr。创办，是同《滚石》杂志相抗衡的美国音乐杂志。杂志的第一期选用Madonna作为封面人物。《Spin》杂志创办初期最独特的标志就是其对各种非主流音乐的报道，以及对当时刚刚兴起的Hip-hop音乐的重视。杂志的选材一向大胆而标新立异，这点同相对保守的《滚石》杂志有很大不同。当R.E.M.、Prince、Run-D.M.C.、The Eurythmics、Beastie Boys和TalkingHeads等艺人及乐队还没有受到广泛认可的时候，《Spin》就已经开始地用他们作封面并进行大篇幅的报道了。在其报道的音乐类型中，硬核、乡村、雷鬼、世界音乐、实验音乐和地下音乐都占了相当大的比重。同时，在其他出版物都还对Hip-Hop音乐还没有涉及的时候，《Spin》就已经对这种音乐类型及其相关文化的做了细致详尽的报道。2008年2月，《Spin》杂志推出了电子版本。
