The notation 8va is sometimes seen in sheet music, meaning "play this an octave higher than written" (all' ottava: "at the octave" or all' 8va).

8va stands for ottava, the Italian word for octave (or "eighth"); the octave above may be specified as ottava alta or ottava sopra.

八度记号大致可分为以下三种：
1.1 八度移高记号（8va）
当需要把过高的附加线消除时，便会将该部分移低一个纯八度记谱，并在顶部加上8va或 8以作识别，这是取自意大利文中“八度”（ottava），而适用的范围，亦会以断续线（- - - - - - - - - ¬）来区别。8va不存在叠音的作用，[3]因此得出来的效果依然是单音旋律。
以马勒的第1号交响曲为例子：其中在第4乐章，第1小提琴在练习号36中，第二声部出现了连续的八度移高记号，直接最后一小节前为止。在八度移高记号的范围内所奏出的音，和第一声部以实音记谱的音高是相同的。

1.2 八度移低记号（8vb，8 basso）
和八度移高记号相反，当需要把过低的附加线消除时，便会将该段部分移高一个纯八度记谱，并在底部加上8vb、8 basso或是 8以作识别（意大利语：ottava basso（众数为a尾））。同样适用的范围，亦会以断续线（_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ⌋）来区别。同样地8vb也不存在任何叠音的作用。
以德布西的《前奏曲》第1册第10首为例，在第28小节中，右手的C1音以法语8abassa标示，亦即是实际的音高变成为C0音。

1.3 八度同奏记号（col 8va，coll' 8va）
取自意大利文 coll'ottava，解作“和相应的八度一同出现”，表示演奏时除需弹奏乐谱标示的音高外，也要加添相应的八度移位，视乎记号的位置而定。适用范围同样以断续线（- - - - - - - - - ¬，加添高八度）或（_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ⌋，加添低八度）来划定。
八度同奏记号较常在即兴音乐，如爵士乐中的钢琴乐谱较常出现。另外，作曲家在撰写乐队总谱时，为求方便源故，对一些演奏相同旋律但位处不同音域时（如第1小提琴和第2小提琴、大提琴和低音提琴等），亦会在五线谱上标上，如“8va col Violino I”或“8 basso col Celli”。尤以巴洛克时代及古典时期的作曲家较多采用。
