The downbeat is the first beat of the bar, i.e. number 1. The upbeat is the last beat in the previous bar which immediately precedes, and hence anticipates, the downbeat.[4] Both terms correspond to the direction taken by the hand of a conductor.
Downbeat:the downward stroke of a conductor indicating the principally accented note of a measure of music; also : the first beat of a measure
——https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/downbeat
Upbeat:an unaccented beat or portion of a beat in a musical measure; specifically : the last beat of the measure
——https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/upbeat
The guitar in reggae usually plays on the off beat of the rhythm. So if one is counting in 4/4 time and counting 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +, one would play a downstroke on the "and" part of the beat.
1,off beat(我另外一个研究国外爵士资料的朋友也说是off-beat和on-beat)
