Constellations is written for Gino Herman in 1986. Gino was in his final year at the Academy, and needed a contemporary piece. Armand Coeck, his teacher, said him: "Why don't you compose a piece yourself?" And Gino started a piece and the following week showed it to the master. Armand Coeck didn't made any composition for the passed 5 years that time - he was playing that period Paraguayan Harp very intense, and was becoming very famous as a harp player. When he saw the troubles Gino had making a nice piece, he started himself composing again and told nobody.
Armand Coeck told me personally that he had some weird experiences while composing Constellations. He once was at a graveyard with a good friend, a poet, to pay tribute to an old friend who died some years before... night was falling, the clouds were passing by very low and fast. It was a strange atmosphere... The master glanced to the moon and suddenly noticed a big owl, sitting on a wall, and looking all the time to them.
Some weeks later Coeck and the poet met again in his garden to plant the seed of a very rare plant, Datura Stramonium. It took them years to find that seed. Night was falling, and the full moon was rising. The moment they looked to the moon, they saw again a big owl, sitting in a tree, and looking to them. Till now Armand Coeck is convinced it was twice the same owl. (You have to know that I never have seen an owl in Belgium in free nature, they are rare and very shy).
Because of all this, Coeck composed Constellations in a strange atmosphere.
