The JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition 2006
Rules of the Competition and Application Information
The Competition is open to classical guitarists of all ages who are at the onset of their careers and who are not represented by major artist management and are not a party to an exclusive recording contract.
Applicants must request an official application form: (E-mail) fallettacomp@aol.com; (Fax) 716.681.9208
Preliminary Round: One of the following concertos must be chosen for the entire competition, and the same concerto is to be performed in each round of the competition. Competitors will not be permitted to change the concerto selection after an application has been submitted.
Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco: Concerto No. 1 in D major, Op. 99
Manuel Ponce: Concierto del Sur
Joaquin Rodrigo: Concierto de Aranjuez
Roberto Sierra: Folias
Heitor Villa-Lobos: Concerto for Guitar and Small Orchestra
Applicants must submit a high quality, unedited compact disc recording of the following repertoire for a “blind” judging. (To preserve anonymity, vocal introductions and any and all other audio clues to one’s gender, nationality, country of residence, or identity must be avoided.)
One work, at least five minutes in duration, from a live performance.
The first movement from the concerto of the competitor’s choice, from those listed above, with piano or orchestral accompaniment. (Please note that if the Roberto Sierra “Folias” is selected, the entire concerto must be performed on the CD.)
Required piece: J. S. Bach: Prelude and Allegro from Prelude, Fugue and Allegro, BWV 998. Any edition. No repeats.
Free choice program of five to eight minutes not including any previously mentioned material or requirements.
Selection of the semifinalists and alternates will be based exclusively on the results of “blind” judging of each applicant’s entire compact disc recording.
Judges will evaluate the entire CD program for each applicant and assign a point-based score for the overall performance. The overall scores will be grouped by concerto. The three competitors with the highest overall scores from each group will then be ranked. The top two performers within each group will then be selected to advance to the semifinal round and the third ranking performer within each group will be selected as an alternate.
Update: In order to accommodate the schedule of the Panel of Judges, the Application Postmark deadline has been moved to March 15, 2006 with the official announcement and posting of the Semifinalists and Alternates on May 1, 2006.
Semifinal Round: Ten applicants will advance from the preliminary round to the semifinal round. Each semifinalist will give a public performance of approximately 25 minutes. A random drawing will determine the order of performance. The required repertoire for the semifinal round is as follows:
1.) Each semifinalist should be prepared to play his or her entire concerto with piano accompaniment. The accompanist and one rehearsal will be provided; however, each competitor has the option to perform with another accompanist of choice at his or her own expense. Please note that the Roberto Sierra “Folias” must be performed in its entirety.
2.) Each semifinalist will be required to perform Evocation by Milen Parashkevov - the winning work from the Composers' Competition and the designated compulsory work for the 2006 JoAnn Falletta International Guitar Concerto Competition. To obtain a copy of the score along with an Application Form, e-mail your request to fallettacomp@aol.com or telephone 716.681.8106 or fax 716.681.9208.
3.) Each semifinalist should be prepared to perform a free choice program of approximately eight minutes. The program should not include the compulsory work or the required solo material from the preliminary round.
Judges have the right to stop performers if they exceed the 25-minute time limit.
As in the preliminary round, judges will evaluate the entire recital program for each semifinalist and assign a point-based score. The overall scores will be grouped by concerto. The competitors with the highest overall scores from each group will then be ranked and the performers with the top three scores will be selected to advance to the final round.
The finalists will be announced immediately following the semifinal round on Wednesday, June 7, 2006.
Final Round: Three semifinalists will advance to the final round to perform in concert with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. This performance will include all movements from the chosen concerto. The Music Director reserves the right to select the order of performers for the final round.
Winners will be announced and prizes awarded immediately following the final round on Saturday, June 10, 2006.
For those participants advancing to the final round, rehearsals will be held on Friday, June 9 and Saturday, June 10, 2006 with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in Kleinhans Music Hall.
Public rounds of the competition will be recorded and filmed for subsequent production and broadcast. Neither the Western New York Public Broadcasting Association nor its assignees or licensees may be held liable for any payments to competitors arising out of materials derived from competition performances.
