What's the recommendation for a classical guitar with the price of USD $1000-1500? I know that the handmade YAMAHA GC31 is in this range but someone told me that the sound of most of YAMAHA guitars cannot creat enough sound - compared with the other brands. Is that true?

For that price I would recommend the Ramirez R1 or the Contreras C4.

Are they hand-made? Do they belong to regular concert guitar or academical guitar(for practise)?

So the sound of Ramirez R1 or the Contreras C4 is bigger than YAMAHA GC31?

My Esteve 8 is in that range. I've never played a Yamaha. When I bought my guitar, I compared to some Antonio Loriente and Kenny Hill New World models.
Where you are and what's available to try is a big determinant. I wasn't into the whole trial period, cross ship internet thing. I think there can be a range of qualities in the same guitar line at this level, so it would be important for me to try a number of them out.
The Esteve 8 is factory made in Spain, is solid woods, has very good finish and is an attractive instrument. The Antonio Loriente's from GSI are also quite good.
See if you can find a shop where you can try out a number of guitars in your range. A small shop will have gone to the trouble to setup the instrument properly too. Plus, they might have used instruments that are a big value.

You should try as many guitars as possible and then decide.

The biggest instrument shop in town is Tom Lee Music, and the most expensive guitar on the shelf is a Flamenco (cannot remember the name, seems like a hand-made) at the price of $999(CAN). Its sound is better, but not MUCH better than YAMAHA C40($139).
I hesitate to consider Ramirez because I want invest the limited money on the sound quality instead of the brand name itself. Although famous brand usually provides better quality, I prefer to find a brand which is not very famous but provides good sound quality.
Did any one hear about Smallman guitar with a new structure?

I don't think Yamaha is a good choice in this price range. The material they used is not good though it looks good. Additionally they are produced in the South Asia factory.
I recommend Hanika 56PF/PC in this price (about 1500$), they worked well and sounds balance.

You may want to look at a Cashimira. I think Ken Powell has one for sale on eBay for about $1250. I have a Cashimira and really like mine -- it is a well made, fine sounding guitar.
I'm not recommending any specific maker or guitar, only suggesting you may want to look at these as well as others.

And then there's always the Cordoba Pro-R. Hand "crafted" (although some ads say hand "made") in Spain. Solid Spruce top, Solid Indian Rosewood back & sides, Cedar neck with Ebony inlay, Ebony fretboard. Really nice guitar! BUT, it's what sounds good to you that matters, so try as many brands & models of those brands that are within your budget until you find what you're looking for. It's really a personal choice.

Cyberninja.
I've heard Smallman guitars and they are superb instruments, but they are also very expensive - many times the amount you mention. I'd love one too, but until I become rich I'll have to just forget about it. You may want to look at the website of German luthier Dieter Hopf. I have one of his hand-made guitars that is in the price range you mention - good value for money with his guitars.

Have you been to Long and McQuade?
Last time I was there they had the Almansa 457 and 459 in that price range, and seemed like nice guitars for the price.

I tried Rodrigues Guitar in Tom Lee. The label price is CAN $999 and the actual price is around $750. The sound is sweet (probably made from cedar instead of spruce?) and warm (not sure if it is hand-made). I am not sure how good a Rodrigues iwill be for the models around $1000-$2000.
The highest priority for me to choose a guitar is the volume of its sound. Since all sample guitars in Tom Lee are below $1000, I did not try any higher model.

anyone ever order from classical guitarra? Any experience with their guitars?
I have a Pavan TP-30 and it's pretty good, but I was looking for something with a spruce top. The TP-30 is good, but I did notice a little string buzzing by the 10th fret on the low e string I already returned one. |
