HELP!!! PLEASE!!! I AM REALLY PUZZLED AND NEED YOUR HELP!!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I’m a student in China and I have a serious problem. I really thank you for reading this message and reply me. Help me, please!
I bought a second-hand guitar ESP KH2 from someone a few months ago, and he declared this guitar was bought from TOM LEE (HK) last year. However, in later days I found this guitar is different from the one shown on ESP official web site, in some details.
The mark on the back of head of this guitar shows ESP CUSTOM GUITARS, not ESP CUSTOM SHOP, so I guess it is an old model. On the back of each turner, it is carved MADE IN JAPAN. There isn’t any mark such as numbers of series or place of production on the back of head. On the steel cover of where the neck bolt-on the body, beside the mark ESP, there is a number, 21518, carved. I guess it is a series number but I don’t know its real meaning.
The color of the body seems black, but under strong light it shows dark blue. The pick-ups are EMG-81(B) and EMG-85(N), not double EMG-81, so I guess whether they are changed by the man who sold me this guitar or they are not changed and the old model is just like this. Strangely, there is no cover on the slot, where is on the head of guitar and is used to mediate the screw of the neck. The seller said that the cover is not set up when it leave the factory and I should set up it by myself, and there is even no screw hole one the head to set up the cover. To my surprised, there is no stick which is on the head and is used to press the strings. On the side of the bridge, it is carved FLOYED ROSE ORIGINAL, not simply FLOYED ROSE. The skull and bones inlays on the fingerboard is also strange, for the dark edge, some kinds of glue maybe, of the skull is somewhat crude, not regular even than that of LTD KH202. It seems like inlayed by handcraft, not machine.
I once suspected it is a fake guitar, but it seems not that possible. Because the naked wood seen from the back of the neck is very good, and the sound is perfect. I uncovered the back of bridge, the material, steel, of the back of the bridge seems really excellent and the quality of the workmanship of the slot is so good that is impossible to appear on a fake one. The man who sold me this guitar declared that this one was bought last year, but I can hardly believe that because the face of the body is scratched badly and there are many slight cracks on the paint. So I think it is a really old one. Fortunately, all of the metallic components are immune from getting rusty.
I guess it is an old model of ESP KH2 but I’m not sure. I’m really afraid it is a fake one, although it doesn’t seems like a fake one. I spend ¥9,000 RMB (about $1,140 USD), my saves for three whole years, on this guitar and I am impatient to know the true source and condition of it. I sincerely hope some kind friends can help me and tell me something about it. If you know the source or condition of this guitar, or can be sure that this guitar is not a fake or is a fake one, please tell me. I’m eagerly waiting for your help!

It's real.
The "ESP custom guitars" stamp is what used to appear. This guitar is old, TOM LEE in Hong Kong have a hard time selling ESPs, it may have been in the store hung up for several years. The scratches are from people 'trying it out' then hanging it back up. It probably came from their store in TST, the main store. I've probably played the same guitar myself.
It retailed here for HK$16,000.
So yes, the person you bought it from could have purchased it recently.
Yes, the inlays look crappy, one reason I don't buy one.

Why does it look blue though? is it cause it's old and faded or what?

Everything looks to be 99% right. I would guess a 1994-7 model, definitely pre-98
"Floyd Rose Original" would have been stamped on pre-Fender Floyds.
The thing that is worrisome is that it doesn't have a string retainer or TRC cover screw pilot hole. Does happen but almost never.....something tells me that it may have a replacement neck.
Pickups and pots are replacements, so are 2 (maybe 3) of the control knobs. The case is not ESP.

TOM LEE were not the offical distrubutors of ESP guitars in Hong Kong during 94-97.
At that time ESPs were only available from Nelson's in Mong Kok, along with Edwards, Grass Roots and Killer.
Also Shinseido Music had guitars in their store in HK, unsure which of the ESP brands they carried, but they had zillions of Japanese made Jacksons and Burny guitars (now carried by Nelson's).
Tsang Fook were the offical distrubutors for Ibanez although SOGO deparment store sold them too.
Later TOM LEE took over Ibanez, ESP and LTD brands probably around 2000, if not the year before.
TOM LEE do not offer trade-ins, so there is no way you can get a 2nd hand guitar from them or older ESPs which pre-dates 98, especially all the way back back to 94.

I’m so grateful to all you above for giving me such help! Thank you for million times! I was just worried that I might purchase a fake guitar by the money I saved several years. No matter when it produced and which parts changed, I’m really glad that it is a real one with no big troubles. With your words I feel relieved.
I’m not sure whether this guitar is REALLY bought from TOM LEE HK last year by the man who sold me or not. I can hardly find and contact with him anymore because we were making the deal online. It is obviously that the pots are replacements. Maybe so are the pick-ups because I heard that the ones on the older model of KH2 were designed by ESP, not EMG. The case is a IBANEZ MC-100, which I purchased later.
Now the last and the most worrisome things are concentrated on three points, which are the dark blue color of the paint and the absence of the string retainer and the cover on the screw pilot hole.I have an assumption that this guitar is an unfinished one and accidentally drained from the factory, so… Can that be possible? Another clue is the number on the back cover, 21518. Could any person worked in ESP tell the batch and date of production from this number?
All in all, I must thank all you above again and again. I was so urgent to wait your answer and you’ve given me. Thank you!

don't worry..
my 1994 m-II esp has exactly the same characteristics, and the black color tned to dark blue, s for the tremolo, the neck, etc...
it is absolutely a REAL ESP, and you made a very good deal!
PLUS, your neck is ONE PIECE, like they used to do it at that time....nowaday it's 3-pieces...
where are you from in China?
