Thank you for your nice comments on my tone.
There is a sound I hear in my head. The best way I can explain it isthat it’s a sound that has a well balanced and well shaped distributionof overtones…not too dark and not too bright (or perhaps better yet, both dark and bright!) but with a definite strong center. It would alsobe clear and not murky, and definitely warm and seductive (to use aterm that has been used in describing my sound!).
Though I look for this sound when playing an instrument, one mustalso be flexible in letting the instruments show its own beauties andbest qualities. This is how an instrument, and we, will sound our best.Besides, we can’t extract out of an instrument a sound that is notwithin the instrument to begin with. The same could be said for strings.
Nail shape is also a definite factor, and depending on the angle ofattack, it seems to me that generally the less pronounced the curvatureof the nail, the thicker the sound. The consistency of the nail is alsoan issue, and my experience is that the harder the nail the clearer thesound. Needless to say, a nail must be shaped as smoothly as glass toget the best tone possible.
For vibrato the two key issues are the width and speed of thevibrato, and the control that we have during its application. GenerallyI like the intensity and warmth that it can give to a note and to theplaying in general, not to mention the singing quality.
Generally, I believe we must hear a sound in our heads and then lookfor it. To have the best guitar, strings, etc… will not get us a greatsound any more than having the best paints and brushes will turn usinto a Picasso!
