| posted 10-20-2007 10:04 AM I'll leave it to the experts to analyze it in detail but I sure amhaving a lot of fun. It's the first one I've ever been to. Dyens wassuperb last night and the vendor area is like a candy store. I have tobe home today but I return tomorrow.
However...outside of the convention itself... I couldn't get a decent mealanywhere! I finally realized that CSUDH is really just a commuteruniversity. I wonder if they even have students who live on campus?!Most universities have funky and interesting little eateriessurrounding them where students hang out. Well, let me tellyou...NOTHING! If it's fast-food you want well... KFC, Del Taco, &Carls Jr. are it! I drove forever and found nothing of interest, evenCoco's (2 miles away) closes at 4:00 PM on Fri - Sun!
Theconvention has been great and the facilities are fine, including theUniversity Theater but... this venue had nothing to offer outside theconvention itself. It was a real surprise to me.
Anyway, here'shoping that Alex B-something or other does well in the finals. Ithought that his playing and that wonderful spruce-top guitar of hiswere exceptional.

| posted 10-20-2007 11:38 AM Thanks, Richard. I was alsowondering. I am planning on going tomorrow. Really want to see ScottTennant. Will I be able to buy a 1-day pass at the door? Or do I haveto buy individual tickets to the lectures, recitals, etc. I'm lookingforward to seeing the youth competitions also.
So,I guess I need to pack a lunch? Is there food available at conventionitself? If so, is there any of the vegetarian variety?
Thanks for you help. It will make my day more smooth.

| posted 10-20-2007 01:12 PM Hi fluttergirl,
RolandDyens' was packed last night and I don't know what's available. Ipurchased a $65 day pass for Sunday when I got there Thursday night andthat will let me into everything. They provide you with an actualticket to the concerts and competition final when you buy the day pass.I'm sure that you could go that way. It's a deal and the goodies youget when you register are cool: two sets of guitar strings, a qualitycapo and some other knicknacks. You might check on the availability oftickets by going to Zaptix (mentioned on their website) and see ifindividual tickets are available.
There's not much more than fast-food around there. I'm thinking of packing a meal myself but I just might hit KFC.

| posted 10-20-2007 04:57 PM For me, the highlight has been Jorge Caballero. I've never seen such asuper-human display of technique since...well, since the last time Isaw him! He played a Bach Prelude and Fugue (the fugue is from the wellknown A minor Violin Sonata), then one of the most mind-blowingperformances ever: Bach's Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue! This is one ofBach's most virtuosic keyboard pieces, so in a way, it's a ridiculousnotion for guitarists to play it, but he sure did! (Philip Hii hasrecorded it--sounds audibly strained in a few spots, plus he omits afew fugal entries.) It just defied belief. Finally, we heardYamashita's arrangement of Dvorak's 9th Symphony! Words just cannot duejustice to the chops involved to play the latter two pieces. For me,the Bach was more impressive due to the extreme musical complexity. TheDvorak is almost a ridiculous technical stunt. He received an instantstanding ovation and rewarded us with a beautiful Peruvian (I assume)cancion.
Allof the players have been incredible: Carlo Marchione, Ben Veredery(such energy!), Wulfin Leiske, Mark Teicholz, and I'm sure Eliot Fiskwill blow us away tonight!
The master classes have been amazing, too. In addition to being an incredible player and teacher, WilliamKanengiser is hilarious. Oh, to study with him...or any of the majorplayers!
The competition semi-finals were also wonderful, although I got a bit tired of Ponce's Allegro from the Sonata Classica(12 repetitions...) All played well, but a few were merely technicallyproficient and needed far more expression. My money is on either MarcinDylla or Aleksandr Tsiboulski. Sadly, I can't stay for the finals. | posted 10-20-2007 10:31 PM So how did Teicholz play? I wasgoing to come down and support him as any good SFCM student should, butI elected to hear Yamashita and Kids in San Francisco instead (also tosave money since I'm way too broke to spend three days on the road...)
Big mistake... |
