The finalists, in order of finish, were Alieksey Vianna (Brazil), Xufei Yang
(China), Lydia Danihelova (sp?) (Slovakia), and Marco Tamayo (Cuba).

Of the 12 semifinalists, I would say10 or 11 were remarkably gifted
guitarists. I have seen about 12 GFA competitions now and none have matched
the depth of quality of this group. Only one, by the way, was from the US
(Gyan Riley). Though I understand all the arguments against competitions, I
think this one was very successful, and thoroughly enjoyable for the
sizeable audience. The panel of judges was stellar and I think the results
were fair, though there will always be differing opinions. If I were King I
would have added Gyan Riley and Rene Izquierdo, at least, to the final
round, but even Kings can't change 6 into 4!
