xxxx,
Do you know why all of Chen's students are female? Or are they not?

They are not. My friend Andy used to study with him, so there's at least one dude.
xxxx:
Well, there are some really good male students of Chen Zhi, like Li Jiatong, Chen Chuan (2nd prize in a Vienna guitar competition), Xu Tuo, Yang Jie (a blind guitarist).
But yes, most of the stars are female students. I heard that little girls are more easily follow the strict training instructions than boys...I hope my words will not hurt feminists...
RAM:
Ok. The thought crossed my mind that his school could by itself address the imbalance that seems to exist in terms of numbers of female classical guitarists worldwide compared to male guitarists! I don't quite understand why classical guitar is such a male dominated field overall. Probably the women are too smart to try to make a living playing guitar. If they have the musical talents they'll pick something with actual job prospects, like any orchestral instrument.
raptor:
Back in the mists of time, most refined women of noble parentage could at least make a passing attempt at playing the lute. It was expected of them, and it provided employment for male teachers to, er, um, "train" them....

Nothing mechanical there. Ms. Shanshan appears to have quite a connection to the music. These new Chinese players are just amazing in all regards. Thanks for posting yet another reason for me to feel bad about how I play.

Actually from what he tells me of his studies with the renowned professor he had little time to eat and sleep, let alone go on a date.

It's Ms. Chen. Chinese people put their last names in front. [Smile]

That is what I always heard but that guy that shot up the VA campus started a debate about it. Now I do not know what to think......
OldNorm:
she's one of the famous four. perhaps the least famous, I've always liked her sense of dynamics, but I think she lacks a little in rhythmic sense to cut it as a soloist besides the other three.
but that's just an opinion, and it also shows what a lie it is that they are all the same. as musicians all four are talented, well-taught yet very different. there's nothing unmusical or impersonal in this playing. certainly nothing mechanical.
