介绍:Born in Gävle, Sweden in 1961 and raised in Stockholm, Mats Bergström began playing the guitar at the age of eight as a student of Carl-Johan Westfelt. He is a graduate of the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and the Juilliard school in New York, where his teachers were Rolf la Fleur and Sharon Isbin, respectively, and has also studied with Peder Riis and John Mills. He made his recital debut at Wigmore Hall in 1983 and is currently pursuing an international career as a soloist, accompanist and ensemble player in various genres.
His repertoire is extensive, with a certain emphasis on the music of the early 19th century (which he enjoys performing on a modern copy of an 1830 Panormo guitar) and the present day. As a soloist he has been featured in the standard guitar concertos and as a chamber musician he has performed works by, among others, Giuliani, Schönberg and Webern. A frequent "Aushilfer" of the Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt, he has also collaborated with the Tale Quartet, the Uppsala Chamber Soloists, the woodwind quintets of Sundsvall, Visby, Östersund and Östgötamusiken, KammarensembleN, the WDR Rundfunkchor in Cologne as well as the BR Rundfunkchor in Munich, and Gustaf Sjökvist's Chamber Choir.
Mats Bergström works regularly with such artists as Tommy Körberg and Lill Lindfors, and has recorded with Malena Ernman, Annika Skoglund, Håkan Hagegård and Erik Sædén, to name but a few. A collaboration of many years with singer and actor Mikael Samuelson on songs by Swedish poets Bellman, Taube and Sjöberg resulted in two productions for the Swedish national television network, SVT, and shows at the Royal Dramatic Theatre and Confidencen in Stockholm, and is captured on five compact discs.
He has arranged a vast number of songs and instrumental works for guitar. His transcription of Schubert's song cycle Die schöne Müllerin, made together with Swiss baritone Martin Bruns, has attracted particular attention. Like many of Mats Bergström's other arrangements, it is published by Gehrmans Musikförlag, Stockholm. It can be heard on a CD with Olle Persson, accompanied by Mr. Bergström (Caprice).
As an improviser (on both electric and acoustic guitars), Mats Bergström has worked with Peter Gullin, Nils Landgren, Berit Andersson & Steve Dobrogosz, Monica & Carl-Axel Dominique, Carol Rogers, Anders Jormin, Hector Bingert's "Latin Lover", and a quartet that he formed with Stefan Nilsson, Teddy Walter and André Ferrari.
His discography includes Villa-Lobos (Proprius), Nordic Spring (Swedish Society Discofil), Castelnuovo-Tedesco (Proprius) and a cross-over album titled With a little help from my friends (Areco). A new solo CD called SubString Bridge, featuring music by Anders Hillborg, Åke Parmerud and Steve Reich, was recently released on BIS Records' Northern Lights label.
Mats Bergström's 2001-2002 season includes a twenty-five concert tour of Sweden with singer Lill Lindfors and cellist/bass player Svante Henryson, Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez with the Jönköping Sinfonietta under Christopher Warren-Green, and the world premiere in Munich of a new work for choir and guitar by Thomas Jennefelt with the Bavarian Radio Choir under Gustaf Sjökvist. In April 2002 SVT will broadcast a documentary featuring Mats with some of his musical partners including violinist Joakim Svenheden, soprano Jeanette Köhn and the Swedish RSO.
In 2001 Mats Bergström was appointed as professor of guitar at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.
