After months of me playing around with my pedals and amps, and constant help from you guys, I just dialed in a perfect mid 1980s Malmsteen tone without using a 1987x or a 1972 JMP. Here's how:
I visited yesterday a guitar store in Manhattan that sold vintage amps. I jumped when I saw a 1972 JMP MKII with tubes that were only a year old. They wanted 2800 for it, so I said no way.
I got an idea though! I brought my equipment (Marshall JCM2000 with JJ tubes, YJM strat, DOD-308, and Boss NS2, and a 1960ax cab). I asked tem politely if I could compare my amp to the 1972. He said the amp was also serviced recently, so keep that in mind.
It took me about 25 minutes to get all my equipment there and set up. I tried the 1972 JMP on about 7 volume (IT hurt REALLY bad) in a sound proof room for 10 minutes with my equipment. It screamed Yngwie, I was suprised. I then switched that head with my DSL 100. The tone was completely different. I had the volume on 1 with my 1960ax cab and was stunned. I then realized in the car my gain knob was at 4.5! I quickly turned it down to 2, turned up the volume and the tone wasn't very different. I then dialed in the mids and matched the tone on the JMP, and to my discovery, the myth is true! The JCM2000 does sound similar to an older MKII with the gain turned down. So, here are the results of my test and the mids and everything set exactly:
If you've got a JCM2000 DSL, try the levels at this:
Volume: at least 2
Gain:2.2
Ultra Gain Lead 1 channel
Presence:4
Bass:7
Treb:4.8
Mid:4.5
DOD:
Gain:9.2
Level:10
It's not exactly like it, but it is pretty close.
You've got to have a cabinet too that has speakers similar to the H30s. I have a 1960ax which is very similar, but if you've got a speaker that is only good for metal, you should get something that sounds more vintage!
So there you have it! I tested both out and proved the myth!
Your discovery about getting older early 70's JMP tones from a Modern hi-gain amp is correct.
The basic difference between vintage amps and modern amps (often times) is the following..
1) Vintage amps have low gain and only get mildly crunchy when maxxed out. But this maxxed out position means the power transformer and tubes are working full out, thus the amp is very touch responsive.
This means when you roll back the guitar volume knob, the amp actually gets clean sounding, not just quieter.
ie.... without touching amp, you should be able to go from a crunchy early Clapton CREAM tone to a clean Hendrix "Little Wing" tone simply by rolling guitar volume knob back from 10 to 4.
(no overdrive pedals in this example)
2) Modern amps often tend to generate all the gain and distortion in the preamp section and only use the power tubes and transformers to regulate the overall volume.
The result can be higher gain at lower volumes, but the feel is usually flat and does not respond to pick attack very well.
Very often modern hi-gain amps have the irritating symptom of bad dynamics.
This means they have stacked to many gain stages in the amp, it is a "one trick pony" that needs Channel Switching to get different tones.
For example with amps suffering this malady, when you roll back the guitar volume knob, the amp does not really clean up -- it simply becomes a quieter version of the same tone.
If a person has a more modern hi gain amp, the first place to start to try and emulate the vintage amp sounds is to try and mimmick what the old amps are doing as closely as possible.
You learned this trick by your own experimentations, but studio guitarists have been using this trick for years when trying to make early Master Volumes, JCM800, JCM900, etc... sound like 60-70s Marshalls when none were available.
As you indicated.......
1) Set Gain to minimum
2) Turn up the amp's VOLUME as loud as possible for your situation
3) Now slowly bring gain knob up while playing thru your guitar (Strat w/ HS3 for example).
With guitar volume on 10, the amount of crunch should be like that of early CREAM
With guitar volume around 4-5, the amp should clean up and have a Hendrix "Little Wing" or "Wind Cries Mary" tone.
The "Yngwie-like" sustain will come from the DOD Overdrive slamming the preamp section of an amp whose power transformers and E43L tubes are already at the saturation point.
Most people make the mistake of trying to get "the tone" with all preamp and "front end" distortion.... which shows they are going down the wrong road to get authenticity.
Especially notable for this mistake are the people on the internet who think Yngwie must use 2 overdrives at the same time.

gain:2.2
presence:4
bass:7
treb:4.8
mid:4.5
dod
gain:9.2
level:10
