Gaudy Paul
Well, here's a double-cut that should be pretty exotic looking when it is finished. It has a AAAAA quilted carved top and a matching 1/4" AAAAA quilted maple back. The center sandwich of the body is wenge. The neck is flame maple and wenge.
The top and back maple plates came from the same billet, so they are pretty close to an exact mirror of each other. It'll have a Floyd and Sustainer but no Variax. I'm really happy about that. I am absolutely burnt out on the variax right now.
After I plane and joint the top and back plates, they are glued.
That's one crazy looking neck.
After the plates have been glued.. The back plate is on the left, top on the right.
Same as always... I'm placing the neck where I want it to sit in the body. Once I'm happy with the placement, I draw a line around it and rout it.
Back plate glued on.
The center is wenge.
Neck pocket routed.
This one gets the SSH pickup rout, so I have to cut the top plate in around the fretboard. I can't do a PRS type rout for the neck pickup. Gotta leave some maple between the fretboard and neck pickup.
Got the top carve roughed in.
Pickup routs done.
Starting on the trem rout.
Quilted Maple headstock overlay glued on.
I decided to chamber the body out to lighten it up a bit.
A A little mock-up. She's looking better!
\ This is cool. Notice how the quilt pattern on the sides match from front to back. That's what I was after. The top and back came from the same billet. I tried to line them up so the grain patterns matched. It turned out pretty well!
Got the rout done for the recessed floyd.
I threw a couple strings on to make sure everything lines up.
All holes drilled and 5-way cut.
Starting the stain job. I applied black first.
Sand most of the black back off.
Now apply the color of choice for this guitar.
All clear coats done. Starting the buffing.
All done.
