[edit] Early life and careerRollino was born and raised in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York, one of 14 children. Only 5 feet 5 inches (1.65 m) tall and weighing 150 pounds (68 kg), Rollino began lifting weights in the 1920s, and toured the US as a boxer, fighting under the name of Kid Dundee. He also became known as a strongman, moving more than a ton, bending nails with his mouth and coins with his bare hands. He often appeared on the Coney Island Festival in the 20s and 30s, being dubbed the world's strongest man. In one feat of strength, Rollino lifted 635 lb (288 kg) with one finger.[1] He once lifted 450 pounds with his teeth.[2] Rollino toured with Warren Lincoln Travis for a time. After retiring from active performing, he worked as a longshoreman.
[edit] Military serviceHe fought in the Pacific during World War II, and was awarded a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts.[2]
[edit] RetirementRollino lived a life of relative obscurity, rarely giving interviews or appearing in public. In a 2008 interview, he claimed to have been "born strong". He never married and lived with a niece. According to friends and family he was in very good shape.
[edit] DeathOn January 11, 2010, Rollino was hit by a minivan as he crossed a street in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn. He died of his injuries at a hospital some hours later, age 104.[1] Because of his longevity, Rollino was known as the "Last of the Coney Island Strongmen".
