I originally posted this in the guitar forum, but was asked to put it in here too as it was originally intended for bass.
This is an article from Novembers Bass Player.
The music world is full of gimmicks and falsehoods, and here is a list of ten of them:
1. Tablature and everything that goes with it.
2. Rock lessons, columns, schools, music books, DVDs.
3. Hand grips or hand strengthening devices.
4. Academic slap excersizes.
5. Two-handed tapping excercises.
6. Excersises that separate right hand from left hand.
7. Metronomes.
8. Applying practice exercises on gigs (this is different from learning the music for the gig).
9. Learning the bass neck via "shapes".
10. Studying with any teacher who asks you "What do you want to work on today?".
The music world is full of meaningful information and truths. Here is a list of ten of them:
1. Read music every day (but not always new music).
2. Study out of time to learn the music, play in time once you have learned it.
3. Give yourself permission to make mistakes.
4. Practice every day.
5. Separate academia from art. They do not relate.
6. Find a teacher who teaches musical content, not rock, slap, tap, two-handed excersizes, etc.
7. Listen to records and imitate what you hear.
8. Jam and gig. But gig more because the musical requirements are higher.
9. Learn academic jazz even if you don't want to play it.
10. Don't practice with a metronome.
Some of the points made sense, but some were a bit...silly. Anyway, I thought it would make for good discussion so... go. |
