Pensa-Suhr Custom1984 Pensa-Suhr R-CustomIn 1984 Rudy Pensa (owner of Rudy's Music Stop and Mark's friend from 1980) started a cooperation with his new employee John Suhr who was working on his own guitars. Schecter Guitars was sold out, Tom Anderson (Schecter guitar former) left the company and took the Pin router and started making bodies to sell to builders. Rudy bought a bunch of unfinished Schecter necks, Tom Anderson cut bodies using a modified strat shape downsized at John's request and Rudy and John started making guitars under Pensa-Suhr name*.
It is first Pensa-Suhr guitar built for Mark. The guitar was used (via Synclaviar) on So Far Away on the Brothers In Arms album.
Also Mark used this guitar during Live in 85/6 tour on Ride Across The River and Why Worry.

1984 Pensa-Suhr, RedThere is some information (is not confirmed) that it is a 'prototype' Pensa-Suhr - first guitar John Suhr built under the Pensa-Suhr name*. It is not known when Mark got this guitar but he used it on Two Young Lovers in the On Every Street tour 1991-1992.

1985 Pensa-Suhr, WhiteIt is a white Schecter Strat custom guitar was assembled by John Suhr specialy for Mark. It features Schecter body (made by Tom Anderson and painted in white by John), a Fender bridge, Seymour Duncan Alnico Pro pick-ups and Dunlop 6110 frets*. It was favorite Mark Knopfler guitar in the mid of 80s.
During the tour 1986 Mark used this guitar on Sultans Of Swing, Waltzing Mathilda и Going Home. Also the guitar was used on The Bug (studio and live) in 1991-1992.

1986 Pensa-Suhr, BlackThe guitar (serial number 014) has flat top, black lacquer finish and it is fitted with EMG active pick-up system*. It is precursor of the 1987 Pensa-Suhr (Maple) model.
The guitar was used on Let it be (Ferry Aid, 1987), Vic & Ray and Water Of Love during the Golden Heart tour 1996. Also Mark used the guitar in Eric Clapton tour in 1987-1989.

1987 Pensa-Suhr, Flamed MapleThe guitar was conceived and designed over coffee on a napkin with Mark Knopfler and Rudy Pensa in 1985*. The guitar was built by John Suhr (under name MK1 with serial number 001) and features a magnificent one-piece contoured maple top backed by one piece of mahogany and a rosewood neck. Fitted with EMG active pick-up system with switchable mid-boost**. The guitar was basis for the Pensa MK1 Signature model.
The guitar debuted during the Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday concert in 1988. It is Mark's main guitar from 1988 till 1993. Now Mark does not use Pensa MK1.
 The guitar was used on tracks on The Notting Hillbillies and Dire Straits albums: Feel Like Going Home, Calling Elvis, Heavy Fuel and Planet of New Orleans. Also the guitar was used for Mark's guest work on songs Love You Too Much (Jeff Healy) and Old Habits Are Hard To Break (Ronnie Milsap)
Mark used the guitar in The Notting Hillbillies tour 1990; Knewborth 1990; On Every Street tour 1991-1992; Prince's Trust, Swan Hunter and Leeds charity concerts. Mark used this guitar last time in Golden Heart tour in 1996.

Golden Heart tour 1996: Romeo & Juliet, Sultans Of Swing, Telegraph Road and Gravy Train.

1988 Pensa-Suhr, KoaIt features koa top and fitted with EMG pick-ups. The guitar was used on Randy Newman's Land Of Dreams album and Neck & Neck duet album with Check Atkins. Later Mark never used this guitar. |
